Weekly Report

I've been so busy teaching school, I haven't had time recently to blog about school. Most things we do on a daily basis are not blog worthy anyway, but here are a few things I've managed to squeeze into our busy days that add life and fun to our routine.

Grant, Chloe, and I are studying rocks and minerals. I love rocks! They don't make you sneeze, and they aren't slimy to touch. :)
This is a crystal growing kit that I bought at Hobby Lobby this week for less than $2.00.

Holding and inspecting real rocks and minerals should add even more life to our rock studies. I bought this study kit from a homeschooled girl at Dragon Mountain Treasures. She has some great kits at affordable prices. We even bought a geode to break open!

Finding an exciting book about rocks that wouldn't put Chloe to sleep proved somewhat challenging. We have enjoyed a few that I picked up at the library. Rocks in His Head by James Stevenson has been our favorite so far. Even if you aren't studying about rocks, this book is a must read for its story about a man struggling to provide for his family during the depression. He finally lands a job in a museum doing what he loves best--talking to others about rocks!

A great series of science books for kids, Let's Read and Find Out, prompted Chloe to want to add to her rock collection when I read aloud Let's Go Rock Collecting.

On the history front, we just finished reading The Hidden Treasure of Glaston. Marvelous book! We learned much about the legend surrounding the tale of King Arthur and the search for the holy grail. Slowly, we are working our way through Monks and Mystics to provide the kids with some background of the history of the church.

Reading aloud to my children has been such a joy for me. Gathering our blankets, we all snuggle in for a good story. Sharing books together brings not only relaxation to our day, but also bonding and learning as we read and discuss characters and their decisions and learn about their times. Here are a few more books we are enjoying these days:

Nice geology resources. Thanks. I love read alouds too. It is one of my favorite parts of homeschooling.

I read to my kids for all the same reasons - the cuddling and sharing, the discussion that happens, and just having those moments with them. The rock studies look like a lot of fun too!
