Summer Reading: The Hiding Place

Two excellent books by the Sherrill's!

I love summertime!  But, I have not always loved the summer weather.  Here in ABQ, I no longer dread the months of June through September like I did while living in Texas.  Summer in ABQ for a Texan means warm sun and warm air--finally!  Besides not being cold all the time, I love all the fresh fruits and vegetables that I can serve my family, the cute little hummingbirds that frequent my feeder, and the delicious grilled foods that Kyle cooks for us.  I like walks with Chloe to the park, helping Allison and Abby make their summer movie, and watching Grant play tennis.  Summer is fun!  But the best part of summer is spare time.  I have time to relax and time to read whatever I want.

My favorite book of the summer so far:  The Hiding Place
I devoured this book over the weekend.  John and Elizabeth Sherrill's story about the ten Boom family held me captivated from the beginning.  The ten Boom family helped many Jews escape into hiding during World War II.  Their own house hid several Jewish people who were difficult to hide for various reasons.  No one else would help these people until they met ten Boom's.  The ten Boom's, betrayed by a fellow Dutchman, were finally caught and arrested for their underground activity.  Corrie ten Boom and her sister Betsie exhibited lasting faith against a backdrop of incredible suffering.  The sisters were able, through their imprisonment, to share the gospel with many women needing to hear the message.  Corrie even shared her faith with a Nazi prison guard during an interrogation.

I'm fascinated by the fact that John and Elizabeth Sherrill wrote the story of Corrie only after hearing of her while doing research on their book, God's Smuggler, about Brother Andrew, a Dutchman who smuggled Bibles behind the iron curtain.  Corrie was already in her 70's when the Sherrill's first heard of her.  Brother Andrew talked about Corrie ten Boom so much that the Sherrill's laughed, and said she sounded like a book all on her own.  And so she was.

The Hiding Place is a must read.  You will find in its pages lessons on contentment and gratitude in the presence of suffering.  May we all learn to seek freedom from whatever imprisons us through truth--the truth of God's word.

"His timing is perfect.  His will is our hiding place."  ~Betsie ten Boom
"You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance."  Psalm 32:7

The Hiding Place is one of my favorites. Lines from that book often come to mind that bring encouragement. The Lord is able to give us joy and peace in the absolute worst situations. Praise God!

I knew there was something I was supposed to remember about her! I was thinking she was in a play--did not remember it was the movie.

Jeanette Clift was nominated for a Golden Globe award for her role as Corrie ten Boom. Jeanette came to know Corrie personally.
