Summer Reading Program 2013

Last year, I deemed our first annual "Bamberg Summer Reading Program" a hit.  Now, if you talk to my kids, they may not all agree on the opinion that it was "a hit".   A couple of the kids see summer reading as a way for mom to make their lives miserable because after all, swimming, bowling, playing video games, making a movie, eating popsicles, texting friends, and sleeping in late are just about ENOUGH activities.  Why ruin a perfect summer with work like reading books?  But, one must consider the prizes.  Icees and chocolate bars won the favorite prize category last year and will definitely make summer reading tolerable this year.

So with the mixed emotions of my kids on this topic, why am I enacting the second annual "Bamberg Summer Reading Program"?  Because I love my kids, and the benefits from a parental and educational standpoint far outweigh any small amount of whining and complaining.  And, the green, blow-up alien prize at the public library isn't floating Chloe's boat.

This year's picks:

Allison
1.  Til We Have Faces by CS Lewis  (Last year's book prize request/wants to reread)
2.  I Kissed Dating Goodbye by Joshua Harris  (Practical)
3.  Jany Eyre by Charlotte Bronte  (Classic)
4.  Watership Down by Richard Adams  (Classic)
5.  A Young Woman After God's Own Heart by Elizabeth George  (Devotional)
6.  Dietrich Bonheoffer:  In the Midst of Wickedness by Geoff and Janet Benge  (Biography)

Abby

2.  I Kissed Dating Goodbye by Joshua Harris  (Practical)
3.  Jany Eyre by Charlotte Bronte  (Classic)
4.  Watership Down by Richard Adams  (Classic)
5.  A Young Woman After God's Own Heart by Elizabeth George  (Devotional)
6.  Dietrich Bonheoffer:  In the Midst of Wickedness by Geoff and Janet Benge (Biography)

Grant
1.  Going Solo by Roald Dahl  (Adventure/Autobiography)
2.  Selected Sherlock Holmes short stories (Classic)
3.  Edith Hamilton’s Mythology  (Classic)
4.  The Book of Three (Prydain Chronicles Book 1):  (Fantasy)
5.  Dietrich Bonheoffer:  In the Midst of Wickedness by Geoff and Janet Benge  (Biography)
6.  Carry On Mr. Bowditch  (Newberry)

Chloe
Again this year, Chloe will be reading to achieve fluency, so she will read for a number of hours instead of having certain books to read.  I am so proud of her progress over this last year!  She will read for 12 hours instead of just the 6 required from her last year.  She said, "Mom, I know I can read more because last year, I could only read for 5 minutes at a time, but this year, I can read for 15!"

Prizes
1.  Icee
2.  Chocolate bar
3.  Friend date
4.  $5 or less prize of choice
5.  Book of choice
6.  Everyone out to eat at summer's end

While the kids are busy texting and sleeping in reading this summer, I plan on catching up on my own reading list as well. Happy summer reading everyone!

I love that you do this. And I love being on the other side of parenthood knowing that when each of those four grow, marry and have children of their own...that they will do this too! {grin}

Inquiring minds want to know what's on teacher's to read list?!

Ha! Sarah, I will read a lot of what I want the kids to read--just to make sure I really want them reading it! Also, I've never read "The Hiding Place". For shame, I know! I want to read that soon. I just finished "The Great Divorce" by Lewis--very thought provoking. Currently working on "I Kissed Dating Goodbye" and hope to squeeze in "Watership Down"--another classic I've never read.

I read Watership Down many years ago. It is one of my all-time favorites. Richard Adams worked in the British civil service, and wrote the book for his kids. It became a blockbuster best-seller, and Adams got very rich. He wrote several more books, but none as good or successful as Watership Down. You will never forget Hazel, Fiver, Bigwig..
