I am reminded of one of the reasons I love books when I read a story
about someone who has overcome many obstacles to become the person God
intended him/her to be. Libraries are full of biographies, but finding
ones that not only capture my attention but also keep it, can be difficult. Finding biographies that capture the attention of children
can be even more challenging!
Chloe and I just finished reading Abigail Adams: Girl of Colonial Days. Part of the Childhood of Famous Americans series, Abigail Adams tells about her struggles as a young girl before finally becoming not only the wife of a president of the United States, but the mother of a US president as well! After Abigail's birth, her parents worried that Abigail would not live. Although she grew and strengthened, Abigail remained a sickly child and missed out on many simple pleasures. Interested in everything about the world around her, Abigail grew to be a remarkable young woman. She was especially interested in the things happening in and around Boston as Revolution for the colonies became an ever increasing threat. Her family was sure she would marry well and were disappointed to find that she would marry "just" a farmer--John Adams. Little did they know, John Adams would one day become the 2nd president of the new nation!
Written on about a third grade reading level, most children will be able to read and enjoy these books on their own. We like them as a read alouds, so we can enjoy the story together.
Happy reading!
