More Summer Reading 2014

I discovered these books through the Orange Marmalade blog.  In our quest to keep Chloe reading more than she plays with electronics, I found them a perfect fit.  I didn't know that they would be so delightful for the whole family!  We all had fun trying to figure out the letter puzzles in CDB!.  CDB?  See the bee?  We had a great time with this book.

Anno's USA has no words--just pictures.  Mitsumasa Anno used Japanese scroll painting to create the intricate pictures found inside.  I had heard of his books before, but every time I would check one out from the library, it would end up at the bottom of our book pile and never get looked at.  When my attention was again brought to his books, I decided to look at it WITH Chloe.  Ah!  What a difference that made.  Anno's books aren't filled with ordinary pictures.  One must study them carefully and talk about them.  As we began to talk about what we saw on each page, we began to figure out what his book was about.  We found the lone traveler on each page traveling through the USA.  We also found funny little scenes in several pictures, and characters like Oscar the Grouch and the Tin Man are sprinkled throughout.  Once we began to see the detail, we couldn't put the book down and kept looking for more.  Even Kyle got in on this book!  I just borrowed Anno's Journey from the library and we can't wait to start looking for what Mitsumasa Anno has in hidden in this one!

Happy Summer Reading!
