Summer is Here!

Does a Mom's heart good to see her reading.

Summer has begun!  Tennis lessons for Chloe have started, and tennis mania for Grant begins next week.  The grill gets fired up at least twice a week, and we've eaten a fair share of watermelon with the hope that more is to come.  Chloe has already read two books this summer for prizes (Slurpees or ice cream being the favored prize), and the rest of us are enjoying books of our choice this summer--no assigned reading.

I finished reading Doctor Dolittle to Chloe last week--a fun book and easy to read out loud.  We then started one of my all time favorite read alouds for kids called The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs Basil E. Frankweiler.  Mixed-Up Files involves adventure, learning, and pure fun as it unfolds the story of two children who run away and hide in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Allison's reading of Till We Have Faces for the third time puts her ahead of me on that one.  We both love this book.  For myself, I just finished reading a great book called The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert by Rosaria Butterfield.  I devoured this one in three days and will just say that it gave me lots to think about.  I'm still processing this book, but I do highly recommend it.

I'm excited that summer has arrived!  Summer is my favorite time of the year in ABQ, or as the natives say, "in the 505".  The weather is finally warm, and I'm not freezing all the time, but the nights are cool and lovely with NO mosquitoes--something a Texan can only dream about.

Our best news of the newly dawned summer, however, came just this last week when we found out that two weeks from today, we will be flying to the great state of Hawaii!!  Maui to be exact.  To say that our family is excited is an understatement.

Happy Summer!

Hawaii!! Wow! I think you'll find my mom stowed away in your luggage when you arrive.

I taught the mixed up files book. It reminded me of wanting to spend the night in the mall when I was a kid. It's a fun story.

I love the book Till We Have Faces. It's definitely one that needs to be read more than once. I read it a long time ago but the part that stands out the most is when the main character finally comes face to face with God. It's her moment to throw at Him all her pent up anger and all of those questions and she's left with no words. His presence is sufficient and the questions disappear.

I'm reading a bunch of books this summer for the 4th grade reading list. I'm teaching all new books next year. I wonder if you guys have read them:
Swiss Family Robinson
Caddie Woodlawn
Gentle Ben
The Princess and the Goblin
A Wrinkle in Time
And some select Grimm's Fairy Tales

I'm enjoying reading them.

Have any of you read Les Miserables. That's one of my favorites!!

I thought about your mom when we first found out we were going!

That part of Till We Have Faces is my favorite part. A Wrinkle in Time was a favorite of mine in about 5th or 6th grade. Grant has read it and liked it a lot. I read Caddie Woodlawn aloud to the three older kids and then again last year to Chloe. We LOVE that book. The Princess and the Goblin is one I've always hoped to get to, but so far have not. None of us have read Les Miserables. We cheated and watched the movie on that one, but maybe someday.... Enjoy all those books Sharon! Let us know what you think of the ones we haven't read.
