Tonight, we celebrate with the team the conclusion of Eldorado High School's tennis season. Grant comes away from the year with an APS singles 1st place medal in his division as well as a 2nd place team win for Eldorado at the state competition last Saturday.
Although Grant played a few singles matches this season, he mostly played doubles, so in the state team competition, he played doubles with Raffa, a foreign exchange student from Spain. We will remember Raffa for two things. Number one, cursing in Spanish when things weren't going his way, and number two, yelling out, "Go big G.!" when Grant was playing on an adjacent court to Raffa.
Last Saturday, the Eagles easily made it to the semi-finals where they played a tough team from Hobbs, NM. In order to move to the finals, they needed to win the best out of 9 matches.
Grant's serving game was spot on.
On his good days, he serves the ball low and fast.
And today, he was nailing them!
The match wasn't an easy win by any means and went to a tie breaker. But Grant and Raffa played some rockin' good tennis and won the match. As the opposing team hit the last shot out of bounds, the team erupted into cheers. What an exciting match! And who said tennis isn't exciting? The team beat Hobbs 5 matches to their 4. Whew!
In the finals, they lost to La Cueva, but the boys are ready to come back next year and try again.
All in all, the experience of playing at the varsity level built Grant's skills, and he had a great time.
