I snagged this picture off of Facebook this morning. I was excited to see that someone took one! Grant's tennis team took first place last weekend in a tournament consolation bracket.
The day started out with much hope and promise of finally bringing home the championship for AHSA (Albuquerque Homeschool Sports Association) tennis. The team had won all their matches during regular season play, and they were a shoo-in for the tournament win. First up was Los Lunas. What the team wasn't expecting was that Los Lunas would have a French foreign exchange student who looked like he spent his life in the gym with weights in his hands. "This kid looks like he's in college!"
Well, play went well for our team except where the foreign exchange kid was involved. Four singles games and two doubles games were played. The result? 3 matches to 3 matches. There would have to be a tie-breaker. The tie-breaking procedure commenced with the counting of how many games were won. For those not familiar with tennis, or for my ailing brain when I read this years from now, that means that when Grant played his singles match (not against Mr. Frenchman), he won his match with a score of 7 games to 5 games. (AHSA=7 points, Los Lunas=5 points) When Grant lost his doubles match (Mr. Frenchman now on the scene), he and his partner lost 0 to 6. (AHSA=0 points, Los Lunas=6 points) So once all six matches were scored, the result was 26 games for Los Lunas and 25 games for AHSA. Can you say heartbreaking??!!
Well, in the end, the team has a great story about the time they got beat by a muscular French foreign exchange student. But, right now, they aren't so thrilled about having that story to tell. However, the hope remained. A consolation bracket was started and our guys mopped up everyone they played. I guess that means they came in second place. In my mind, that's pretty grand.
Congratulations Team Tennis!!
