I don't have much to add to the list of things we have been reading since the beginning of the year. I'm still slogging through The Mortification of Sin, but the end is in sight. I just finished Give Them Grace, and I think I'll start over and read it again--love this book!
In co-op, we just finished up Inkheart. The kids wanted to read it because they had enjoyed the movie so much. Yes, yes, the rule in our house IS indeed that you must read the book before you watch the movie, but honestly, movie makers make almost every book into a movie these days, and I just can't keep up, so this time, we did things a little backward. However, talking with the kids about the character differences in the book vs the movie increases our powers of observation, so I really enjoyed that aspect of having already seen the movie. An enjoyable read, Inkheart was a welcome change of pace from our previous book, The Screwtape Letters.
Chloe and I just finished reading The Cricket in Times Square. We were both sad to see this book end. What's not to love about a Cricket named Chester who lives in the Bellini family's newsstand in Times Square and plays concerts for the people of New York just by rubbing his wings together? But probably the most endearing part of this book is the friendship between Chester Cricket and a mouse named Tucker, Tucker's companion, Harry Cat, and little boy named Mario. Together the friends are able to turn the newsstand's failure into a money-making success. This one is a Newberry Award winner, so don't miss it!
Finishing up books gives me a satisfied feeling. I'm excited for summer and the long, lazy days ahead where I can sit by the pool and relax with a good book.... Oh, wait. I'm a mother. Well, no long relaxing days of sitting by the pool doing nothing await me this summer, but I am excited that I can choose a book not related to homeschooling if I like, and at least I can read a little bit out by the tennis courts where I will likely be all summer long.
What are your reading plans for the summer?
Happy reading!

I'm reading "The Road to Character" by my favorite newspaper columnist, David Brooks. He's best known for political writing, but more often than not, he writes on social/philosophical topics. This book is closer to morality and religion. It's mostly biographies of people he thinks developed great character in their lives and careers. One I just finished was on Dwight Eisenhower.
