Weekly Report: October

Another week is almost finished. In addition to the usual math, grammar, spelling, etc, (you know, the boring stuff) I did a fun activity for my grammar stage children. I decided to post about just that today.

For history this week, we read two books in our quest for knowledge about ancient history. The Revenge of Ishtar is the sequel to Gilgamesh the King. Archaeologists Dig for Clues gave us an idea of how archaeologists know where to dig and what they are looking for, as well as what their discoveries tell them about a people group and their culture. After reading the book, I decided to stage our own archaeological dig.

First, Grant marked off the area with string just like a real archaeologist would do.

Then, he drew a diagram of the area on paper and labeled each square, A through I.

Let the dig begin!

The artifacts

Here a few things the kids said an archaeologist would learn about us from the things they uncovered.

Forgive the underlining in this post. I did not mean to emphasize any text by underlining. I can't seem to get rid of the underlining code that keeps spontaneously showing up no matter how hard I try! I'll chalk it up to our new MAC. Let's just say this computer is great, but certain things are just not the same!

Fun! I keep meaning to do a similar activity for mine... and keep putting it off *sheepish*. Good for you!

Fun activity! The space looks ready for spring planting too.
I'm on a Mac too, but I'm not sure about the spontaneous underlining.

What a fun activity! I need to remember this! I'm having trouble with blogger too...mostly with picts though. Driving me nuts.

What a great activity! My kids love anything that includes digging in the dirt. LOL.

Three cheers for digging in the dirt! When we did this activity, I wimped out and put our "artifacts" in a paper bag. Each kid took out an artifact and made some conjectures about the culture based on the item. Not nearly as creative but much cleaner.

Wow, go you! I'm planning on doing that the next time we go through the Ancients...in four years, ha ha. It's nice to see someone else do it first...way to go the extra mile.

I've planned to do this dig twice and it just never happened. It sure does look like fun.
