I found this great little tool at Rainbow Resource called a reading guide strip. This simple tool cost me only 80 cents and has worked wonders for helping Chloe with her reading. I wish I would have ordered more, so that we could keep them all over the house! Because it highlights the text, and she can move the strip as she reads, the strip keeps her eyes focused on only the words she needs to read. The strips come in several colors, but we like the yellow.
I've been teaching Chloe to highlight the text for her science crossword puzzles. Highlighting really seems to help her focus, whereas without it, she is more likely to keep losing her place which adds to her frustration. As a matter of fact, we've been doing the highlighting on crosswords all year long, and now on shorter puzzles, she doesn't even need the highlighting anymore.
Highlighting helps me, so I figured it might help a struggling reader too, and it has!
