Another week gone and March is almost over! Allison and Abby both finished Life of Fred Fractions. Woohoo! Poor Fred didn't get his bike yet, so on to the next book to find out what happens--Life of Fred Decimals and Percents. I'm really liking these books for the thinking it makes the kids do.

The kids finished coloring the mainland US on our map.

As we get deeper into the complexities of WWII and study about the 1930's and 40's, our timeline is growing crowded with people and events.

Allison, Abby, and Mom are going to read a book called Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. Did you know that during the war, Denmark's people were able to rescue almost all of the nation's 7,500 Jews by hiding them and transporting them to neutral Sweden? Number the Stars is a Newberry Award winning book that takes place in Denmark during this incredible event.

After an extended break from picture study, we got back to it today with a painting by Claude Monet.

After discussing the picture, we read a book about Monet called Monet's Impressions. The book is mostly a collection of Monet's work. Later, we hope to read more about Monet in Venezia's book, Monet.

We ended our time of picture study with an art project that I found here. A couple of my children had trouble with this project because it was too unstructured. They wanted the painting to be perfect! But, the idea of impressionism is that the painting only leave an impression of the objects being painted. Impressionist art often looks better when viewed from a distance because your eye will blend the colors together allowing you to see clearly what has been painted. I guess we'll need to do more free form kinds of activities to loosen these kids up!
Here are our results.

Your kids' school sounds fun! Good job on those impressions kids.
I love Monet! I was able to see some of his paintings when I went to Paris at the Musee d'Orsay. It was so nice getting to see the real thing instead of a reproduction.
