As part of our westward travel study in history, we have been working on a "Westward Expansion" lapbook from Hands of a Child. We normally do lots of reading for history, but I wanted a change of pace for the kids, so I decided to try something a little more hands-on.

To keep the project from getting too tedious, I did some of the cutting for the kids which I actually enjoy doing.

We read about trees, leaves, apples, and squirrels. Then, Chloe colored some things we found by searching the internet and glued them wherever she wanted. I like to do this kind of lapbooking to give her a chance to be creative.

For picture study this term, we are studying Pierre Auguste Renoir. We are using Mike Venezia's book to learn more about Renoir.

We needed a criteria from which to choose the art work we study, and I found what I was looking for at Higher Up and Further In. Lindafay states that in order to study a work of art, that work must 1. Be a thing of beauty, 2. It must require great skill, and 3. It must express a worthy idea. Check out her blog if you like Charlotte Mason's ideas. Her blog is a wealth of information.
We also completed Challenge #10 in our nature study. Check out our nature blog to see the results.

I always enjoy reading your weekly reports with the photos. I look forward to next week. By the way, you get a lot of work done during the week, and the kids look like they're having fun!
Cheers,
